My name is Svend and I am a statistician/bioinformatician. On this blog I calculate and visualize information in datasets.
The big question is, how much do I calculate and what do I visualize. In one extreme, everything is calculated. I test all hypotheses statistically and I arrive at a single mathematical model describing everything. However, this only reveals a few aspects of the dataset. It is also difficult to understand the models, so many readers would simply have to trust my calculations. And why should they? I am just a random person on the internet. In the other extreme, nothing is calculated and we only see ‘raw data’ visualized. Raw visualizations are useful, but they only scratch the surface. I aim to be in the best place between the two; enough calculations to make things interesting, yet not so many that the analysis become narrow and hard to understand.
Because I am a big fan of Esperanto, I analyze many datasets related the language. The name of the blog, Kalkulinda, also comes from Esperanto and translates to ‘calculation-worthy’.

Mia nomo estas Svend kaj mi estas statistikisto/bioinformisto. En ĉi tiu blogo mi kalkulas kaj bildigas informojn de datenaroj.
La ĉefa demando estas, kiom mi kalkulas kaj kion mi bildigas? Ekstremo estas kalkuli ĉion. Mi testas ĉiun hipotezon kaj finfine la datenaro estas tute priskribita per unu matematika modelo. Tiumaniere ni nur sciiĝus pri malmultaj aspektoj de la datenaro. Ankaŭ estas malfacile kompreni la modelojn, do granda parto de la legantaro devus simple fidi miajn kalkuladojn. Kial ili devus fidi min? Mi nur estas hazardulo sur la reto. La alia ekstremo estas kalkuli nenion kaj simple bildigi la krudan datenaron. Krudaj bildigoj estas utila, sed ili ne profunde esploras datenarojn. Mi celas fari analizojn, kiuj estas inter la du ekstremoj; sufiĉe da kalkuladoj por eltiri interesajn informojn, sed ne tiom da kalkuladoj ke la analizo estas mallarĝa kaj malfacile komprenebla.
Mi estas esperantisto, do mi ofte esploras datenarojn rilate al la lingvo.
